Customs and traditions
Cape Verde is a poor country in some regions. Any donations of clothing (light and warm), shoes, school supplies, etc. will be greatly appreciated by the local populations. On the other hand, we do not encourage their distribution to children or other beggars... these are indeed incentives to begging. Pens and other school supplies should be given to village teachers. Any medicines you wish to donate should be given to infirmaries or dispensaries, which will then distribute them. Clothing can be offered as a thank you following an invitation. Sweets should be avoided.
Climate
With its hot and dry tropical climate, Cape Verde has two seasons:
The rainy season is between July and late September/early October.
The dry season, the best time to go to Cape Verde is between October and June.
Cape Verde, also called "The Windward Islands", has a particularly strong wind between December and March.
Fauna and flora
Cape Verde offers a varied flora: pastures and cultivated areas (coconut, sweet potato, sorghum, coffee, banana, corn, coffee, vines, cassava, etc.), semi-desert savannah, acacias, Canary Islands dragon tree (a high-altitude plant that looks like a large parasol that can sometimes reach 20 m in height).
There are also many domestic animals, introduced by the Portuguese. They have developed to the detriment of wild species. There are still monkeys in the mountains, reptiles (lizards, giant tortoises from the island of Maio) and more than 70 species of birds, including the osprey, a seabird, the Cape Verde albatross (pufino) or the Raso lark.
Telecommunications
The guide and/or driver is equipped with a means of communication to quickly contact emergency services if necessary.
Time difference
Cape Verde is at GMT -1, that is:
in summer: there is a three-hour time difference (when it is 12:00 in France, it is 9:00 in Cape Verde).
in winter: there is a two-hour time difference (when it is 12:00 in France, it is 10:00 in Cape Verde)
Electricity
It is supplied by Portugal. The power outlets are the same as in France (220 volts). Power cuts are frequent, including in Praia, the capital.
