This is a route between Boca de Ambas-as-Ribeiras in Ribeira Grande and Chã de Igreja, which requires a good deal of effort on the part of those walking uphill due to the long, steep slopes (if you wish, you can take a car here to return to the city). In any case, you’ll always pass through the village of Mocho and admire some fascinating landscapes.
Explore the trail between Boca de Ambas Ribeiras/ Mocho/ Chã de Igreja. Follow the trail to Santo Antão, marvelling at the vast vegetation that emerges from between the terraces. Zig-zag along the trail, enjoy the view of the valley and visit a rum distillery before heading back. Go to the edge and enjoy the most breathtaking views of the green valley of the Heron stretching out before you. Look out over the ocean, 4 kilometres away, and take a breather before embarking on the next challenge. Start the zigzag section of the trail and get to know the native vegetation as you pass beautiful plantations of sugar cane, bananas, mangoes, avocados, coconuts and much more. Learn about the production of local rum in a traditional distillery and try the famous Grogue.
